A Tradition of Quality
Bill Campos, President of Monarch Builders of SW Florida, Inc. knew from a very young age what he wanted to do with his life. In 1964 at the young age of 15, Campos began assisting his uncle with remodeling projects; at 18, he decided to start his own company; and at 21, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Construction Engineering from Roger Williams University. Since that time, he has managed the construction of thousands of residential, design/build new homes and remodeling projects. Bill’s dedication to quality and customer service is unrivaled in the building industry.
One of his largest building projects was a 120-unit luxury condominium development in Needham, Massachusetts. One of the most demanding was an all-glass, octagonal home built onto a rock in Newport, Rhode Island. His most memorable renovation, however, involved carving eight luxury condominiums from a 30,000 square foot mansion that had belonged to Hetty Green—the world’s richest woman in the late 1800s, generally known as the “Witch of Wall Street” for her notorious miserliness.
After 40 years in the building and remodeling business in Providence, Rhode Island, Bill moved to the Bonita Springs-Estero area on our beautiful Southwest Florida coast. It was not the weather, ambiance, business potential or growth opportunities. His main incentive was a woman.
He met his future wife, Naples resident Emily Ross, when she was a guest at one of his summer beach parties in Providence. They now own and manage Bonita Springs-based Monarch Builders of SW Florida, a premier custom home construction company that has earned numerous awards, including two Professional Remodeler design awards in 2013.
Bill and Emily are both very active in community service with Monarch Builders of SW Florida being respected members of the Collier Building Industry Association, the Florida Home Builders Association, the National Association of Home Builders, the Woman’s Council of Realtors – Naples on the Gulf Chapter, the Rookery Pointe Architectural Review Board and Fine Committee, the Naples Area Board of Realtors (NABOR), the Bonita-Estero Association of Realtors (BEAR), the Estero Chamber of Commerce, the National Kitchen and Bath Association, past Chairman of the Zoning Board and past President and State Chairman of the Lions Club. In his own words, “We like giving back. It’s not only rewarding, but we always get more out of it than we put in.”
He recently became a Certified Aging in Place Specialist, which identifies him as one of a select group of building/remodeling professionals nationwide with the necessary skills and knowledge to modify homes for the unique needs of seniors and individuals with disabilities.
Since its launch, Monarch has since grown exponentially— largely on the basis of referrals, which accounted for 92.6 percent of the firm’s business this year. Notably, 2013 saw a 60 percent growth in business over 2012. As Campos explained: “We’re not just about sticks and bricks. We talk with our clients to learn about the family’s lifestyle and the way they intend to use the space, because we’re not just building homes; we’re building long-term relationships.”
Educating clients is another important part of the job, according to Campos. To this end, Monarch provides a 30- page consumer awareness guide: “10 Things You Must Know Before Hiring a Remodeling Contractor.” Monarch can be reached at 239-405-7351.
A major issue negatively affecting not only his business but the local economy as a whole is the severe shortage of skilled labor within the building trades. Campos is currently working with area groups to address this issue. As he admitted with a smile: “I love a challenge.” Considering the scope of his history in the construction industry (since 1967), that may be an understatement.
